Religionen sind eine treibende Kraft in Globalisierungsprozessen. Migration und Mobilität spielen in diesem Zusammenhang eine zentrale Rolle.

Neue Migranten aus Afrika und Asien gründen in Deutschland und in Europa transnationale religiöse Netzwerke: Buddhistische Vereinigungen und pfingstkirchliche Gebetsnetzwerke entstehen in Kellerräumen, Wohnzimmern und leerstehenden Fabrikgebäuden. Heilungsgottesdienste und andere religiöse Rituale finden an Orten statt, die ehemals mit Produktion und Konsumption verbunden waren. Dadurch verändert sich die religiöse Landschaft in Deutschland.

Die größten Migrantengruppen aus Asien und Afrika in Berlin sind Vietnamesen und Ghanaer. Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes wurden ihre religiösen Vorstellungen und Vernetzungen insbesondere auch mit Blick auf urbane Räume untersucht. Methodologisch orientierte sich die teilnehmende Beobachtung an konzeptionellen Neuerungen, die durch die Globalisierungs- und Transnationalismusdiskussion in die Ethnologie eingebracht worden sind. Der Fokus der Feldforschungen lag auf der Ausgestaltung und Intensität der Verbindungen zwischen Orten in Deutschland und den Rückwirkungen religiöser Praktiken und Botschaften in den jeweiligen Herkunftsgesellschaften, Ghana und Vietnam. Besondere Beachtung fanden auch diejenigen Akteure, die selbst nicht migrieren, aber deren alltägliches Leben oder Vorstellungswelten durch die grenzüberschreitenden Beziehungen ihrer Freunde, Verwandten und Nachbarn geprägt sind.

Die Forschung fokussierte auf

• Transnationale und translokale Netzwerke,

• Ethnische, kulturelle und linguistische Diversität,

• Mobilität von Laien und Experten,

• Verortung in der Stadt und religiöse Aneignung des urbanen Raumes,

• Überlappung von religiösen und ökonomischen Praktiken,

• Rückwirkungen auf die Herkunftsgesellschaft,

sowie das Verhältnis zwischen Pentekostalem Christentum und Formen so genannter traditioneller Religiosität (Ahnenverehrung, Geistbesessenheit, Wahrsagerei).
