Christine Schmid present some current aspects of her PhD research on expertise-by-experience from peers in psychiatric settings.

Peer support currently reaches the German mental health care landscape and is a relatively new and rare branch of profession within the German health care system. At the same time, debates about “experience” and its impact on academic knowledge, in this case so called psychiatric expertise, boom. But, how does practice of knowledge change if persons with experience of psychiatric help systems, or in the words of a German peer- support worker ‘madmen by profession’, permeate into the psychiatric system? How does ‘lived through’ experiential knowledge link with so-called ‘professional’ expert knowledge of psychiatrists, nurses and physicians (and their experiences)?

In her PhD, she tries to follow these questions and trajectories of “experience” surrounding "Genesungsbegleitung". How can this be done empirically? In her talk, she will mainly focus on the methodological questions, implications and difficulties that occurred in the course of her fieldwork so far.

She will bring some empirical examples and try to include previous debates in the lab on methods or methodology.

Please note that the talk will be held in German.
