Arjun Appadurai joins the Institute of European Ethnology as Visiting Professor

Institute for European Ethnology

We are glad to announce that Arjun Appadurai, Goddard Professor in Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, will spend his sabbatical year 2016/2017 as a Visiting Professor at the Institute of European Ethnology at Humboldt-‐Universität zu Berlin. Prof. Dr. Appadurai is a prominent cultural anthropologist and a leading intellectual in cultural globalization studies, renowned worldwide for his pioneering, seminal contributions in this field, e.g. Modernity at Large (1996) and, more recently, The Future as Cultural Fact (2013).

While staying in Berlin, Arjun Appadurai will finalize a book on “European self-‐making in the age of empire”. He will cooperate with us in our work on reflexive Europeanization, migration and border studies, and contentious cultural heritage. We are looking forward to build with him on a broad range of shared interests in these fields, from imagination and aspiration in migration movements across European borders, transnational archives and memory politics, religion and social movements, democracy and new nationalisms, to postcolonial entanglements of (Eastern) Europe. Specific designs of collaborations and joint research work in the Institute as well as in several scientific networks at Humboldt-‐ Universität and beyond are underway.
