PhD Studentship: Heritage and New Media
Position profile:
The successful candidate will conduct research on heritage and new media, within the framework of Sharon Macdonald’s Alexander von Humboldt professorship (the ‘Making Differences in Berlin’ project). We are particularly interested in proposals to explore new media use and its role or potential in senses of belonging, heritage and identity, especially among Turkish and/or Vietnamese-speaking individuals and groups in Berlin. Candidates with original and high quality proposals to examine other areas of heritage and new media use are also encouraged to apply. In all cases, we are especially interested in research proposals that use ethnographic and collaborative approaches, and that show high-level awareness of relevant theoretical and methodological debates, as well as pursuing an original angle.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a strong academic track record, with an excellent BA and MA or their equivalents. This will be in social anthropology, European ethnology, sociology or other relevant discipline. The successful candidate will have completed research training in qualitative methodologies, ideally including ethnography. The successful candidate will be sufficiently competent in the languages necessary for them to effectively conduct their planned research.

PhD Studentship: Science and Citizenship
Position profile:
The successful candidate will conduct research in an area that intersects between the research project of Sharon Macdonald’s Alexander von Humboldt professorship (the ‘Making Differences in Berlin’ project) and the interests of the Museum of Natural History, Berlin. The following are areas that we have identified as ones that we may give preference to in our candidate selection: (1) visitor research; (2) citizen science; (3) relationships between the digital and material. Candidates with original and high quality applications in other areas that intersect the interests of CARMAH and the MfN are also encouraged to apply. In all cases, we are especially interested in research proposals that use ethnographic and collaborative approaches, and that show high-level awareness of relevant theoretical and methodological debates, as well as pursuing an original angle.
