This presentation is part of an on-gong inquiry into the role of imperial projects in Europe's always contested and always incomplete effort to define itself. India under British rule is a key imperial site in which the problem of secularism in European modernity was staged and shaped.

Arjun Appadurai, Goddard Professor in Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, will be pursuing own and collaborative projects while spending his sabbatical year 2016/2017 as a Visiting Professor at the Institute of European Ethnology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He is the author of several ground-breaking contributions on the dynamics and effects of cultural globalization, such as Modernity at Large (1996), and The Future as Cultural Fact (2013).
