Prof. Dr. Elahe Haschemi Yekani (Department of English and American Studies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)

Against the backdrop of the toppling of the statue of Edward Colston in Bristol in 2020, this talk discusses British memorial culture around enslavement and abolition and specifically how nostalgia for a British exceptionalism resurfaced in the 2007 events commemorating the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade. I will discuss interventions by artists of colour and suggest embracing a queer, less congratulatory mode of engagement with the past that also moves away from frameworks of empathy.
