Minor ethnography and the politics of life at the margins

Michele Lancione (University of Sheffield, UK)

How can one research and intervene in the politics of life at the margins? On the one hand, there is the problem of not reducing it to mainstream categorisations and forms of control. On the other, there are the challenges of working within that politics from the standpoint of academic labor. Feminist, post-colonial and post-structuralist theorists have been concerned with these questions for a while. Few, however, have provided approaches capable of holding together both theorization and intervention, without reducing them to problem-solving and impact agendas. In this paper I propose an exploratory and politically charged ‘minor ethnography’, as an epistemology oriented at unsettling dichotomic and instrumental readings of research and action. Discussing limits and opportunities from original ethnographic work, the paper shows the important insights that a minor ethnographic approach offers to a contemporary radical scholarship of marginality.

Michele is an urban ethnographer and activist based at the Urban Institute, University of Sheffield.
