Distribute 2020 - Berlin digital Node

Join us for a virtual ethnographic film festival!

About Distribute 2020

Distribute 2020 is the second international Online-Conference by the Society for Cultural Anthropology (SCA) and the Society for Visual Anthropology (SVA).

Between the 7th and 9th of May more than 20 virtual panel discussions will address distribution of knowledge, infrastructures, goods, people and even sounds. The panels draw on feminist, postcolonial, anti-fascist and environmentalist perspectives.

Additionally, a virtual ethnographic Film Festival will be available from the 7th to 14th of May. The curators Fiona P. McDonald and Harjant Gill selected 21 films providing ethnographic insights into anthropological key issues like migration, human rights, the environment, multispecies engagement and religion.

In local “Nodes” all over the globe participants come together, exchange ideas, meet friends and colleagues. Because of Covid-19 the Berlin Node will be online-only! Our Node-activities will concentrate on the ethnographic Film Festival.

Berlin Node – Program

Aperitif

7th May, 19:30
HU-Zoom-link: https://hu-berlin.zoom.us/j/99610080223 *

In this welcoming-session on the evening of the first day of Distribute2020 we want to get to know each other as Node members and make sure to answer any question concerning the conference.

We are going to vote which films we will be discussing in our Node! We encourage you to check the film program beforehand – you can even have a look into the films during the first conference day. We will decide for one movie and two short films.

Movie-Discussion

9th May, 17:00 - 18:15
HU-Zoom-link: https://hu-berlin.zoom.us/j/99610080223

After a short welcome, we will be exchanging views on the chosen film "The End of an Era" (Dir: Paloma Yáñez Serrano & Benjamin Llorens Rocamora).
Between Thursday evening (when we vote for the film in our Aperitif) and our discussion on Saturday you can watch the film at any time you want, independently. If you like, you can bring screenshots, quotations and maybe even short screencasts to enrich the discussion!

A Pair of Short Films

9th May, 18:30 - 20:00
HU-Zoom-link: https://hu-berlin.zoom.us/j/99610080223

Let’s watch together three short films:

Logistics // Distribution // Fulfillment (Dir. William Morrison)

Color (Dir. Tierney Brown)

Women Only (Dir: Samira Hatamizadeh)

We want to discuss how they succeed in telling ethnographic stories with their respective cinematic approach.

Stay for a Drink

9th May, 20:30 - 21:30
HU-Zoom-link: https://hu-berlin.zoom.us/j/99610080223

We want to close the conference by sharing some thoughts about our Distribute2020-experiences and favorite sessions. Enjoy a drink and our film quiz!
