Guest teaching at IfEE
The Instiute for European Ethnology (IfEE) awards Lehraufträge* (teaching assignments) each semester to instructors in European Ethnology, related disciplines and to anthropologically informed practitioners from outside academia.
These assignments (in English and/or German) enrich the curriculum and support the institute’s research profile. Please learn more about IfEE and its research and about the institute‘s structures.
Lehraufträge are independent teaching assignments, not employment contracts as per § 120 BerlHG and the HU Constitution. Guest teaching at HU Berlin is governed by the „Richtlinie zur Vergabe von Lehraufträgen“.
We are only offering weekly seminars in presence. Time frames correspond with the semester dates at Humboldt University Berlin.
Process for selecting guest lecturers
At the beginning of each semester, the „Kommission für Lehre und Studium“ (LSK) identifies curriculum gaps or emerging needs based on student demand and research trends.
Up to three Lehraufträge per semester can be awarded.
Application Requirements
Please submit applications to LSK via E-Mail to the current teaching coordination.
Each application should include:
- Completed application form
- Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages), incl. relevant teaching experience
- Applicants propose BA or MA modules. The BA and MA programs are organized into modules. These modules are defined in the official study regulations and provide essential guidance for designing courses. As a general principle, the more foundational and broadly relevant the seminar content, the more effectively it supports student learning.
- Optional: Draft of Course Syllabus, sample materials, teaching concept, references
Please use the following application forms:
Compensation
Teaching assignments are remunerated according to the number of individual teaching hours. Travel expenses and preparation time can unfortunately not be reimbursed. A teaching hour is a 45-minute lesson. Depending on the tasks and experience level, the pay ranges from €40 to €70. HU staff cannot be remunerated additionally. Teaching positions for people in public service are usually also not remunerated. Payment may also be waived. We ask for your understanding in this matter. Please contact us for considering special circumstances.
Submission Deadlines
For applications for winter semester: May 1
For applications for summer semester: November 1
How we evaluate applications
The LSK conducts an initial screening for completeness and relevance. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Selection criteria:
- Demonstrated academic expertise in European Ethnology or engagement with ethnological and anthropological themes relevant for IfEE.
- Relevant teaching experience or a demonstrated willingness to gain experience and develop a clear teaching experience in line with IfEE profile
- Assumption of responsibility in administrative procedures; professional self-administration of the seminar
- Responsiveness to curriculum needs as determined by the LSK
- In accordance with AMB 02/2019, all guest lecturers must hold a completed university degree, demonstrate pedagogical aptitude, and adhere to academic and research ethics standards as well as HU values of diversity
- Mandatory is the availability in person for the duration of the semester.
- Optional is the availability during the exam period (Modulabschlussprüfungen / MAPs). The format of the final assessment (oral or written) is determined by the guest lecturer. However, examination duties are not remunerated.
Important note: Shortlisted candidates may be asked to revise proposals to better align with the curriculum and the modular structure of the IfEE. This is a collaborative process supported by designated LSK members.
How is a Lehrauftrag finalised
Once selected:
- LSK submits a recommendation to the IfEE Council (Institutsrat) and directors
- Upon approval, a formal Lehrauftrag contract is issued
- The IfEE Secretariat manages contract processing and official communication
