In the face of planetary crises and geopolitical conflicts, digital technologies have taken on new meanings and new imaginaries. States, international institutions and multinational corporations see digital communication infrastructures as tools for resilience, security and, above all, sovereignty. Therefore, designing, maintaining and expanding digital infrastructure increasingly turns into an indispensable geopolitical and geoeconomic strategy. At the same time, technology is inextricably linked to society: Everyday practices and interactions are thoroughly mediated and formatted by digital technology, and at the same time technology itself is deeply permeated and shaped by social practice. "The Social Life of XG: Digital Infrastructures and the Reconfiguration of Sovereignty and Imagined Communities" has investigated projects of digital and technological sovereignty across multiple sites in Europe: semiconductor fabs in Germany or Austria, 5G and 6G development labs and conferences, lithium-ion battery production sites in Sweden, and more. At our closing conference on October 13th and 14th, we will present and discuss these project findings over two days, delving into the realms of notions of (European) sovereignty, digital infrastructure and the reconfiguration of imagined communities.
